Thinking activity: Doctor Faustus

1) The play directed by Matthew Dunster for Globe theatre ends with this scene (see the image of Lucifer). What does it signify?

Ans.Lucifer is the protagonist of the play. It indicates how the devil rules good things, he is the master of Mephistopheles and the ruler of the kingdom of hell. In the stage performance Mephistopheles takes Faustus' soul and beats his master Lucifer. Dr. Thus, Lucifer's last scene here is indicative of his great triumph

2).Is God present in the play? If yes, where and how? If No, why?
.
Ans.Because God gives us multiple choices, we choose good or bad ways for our purpose. In the play Dr.Faustus chose his own way of gaining knowledge and fame. Of course God sends the old man a sign. But again on Faustus the choice is not visible throughout the play the rest of God. God has life within some good character. A good angel and an old man are present in the play as a good character or we can say that as a god too. Both the old man and the good angle are allegorical characters in the play, but if Sue Lord discriminates against any other person, if the true God has all the same, then how can God discriminate is also a question? So there is no God

3) What reading and interpretation can be given to this image (see the image of Daedalus and Icarus) with reference to central theme of the play Dr. Faustus?

Ans,We know that Daedalus makes wings with wax Daedalus warns his son Icarus about hubris and contentment. But he ignores his father's instruction after gaining strength and flies too close to the sun. The wax wings get warmer and the Icarus falls down into the sea .The image of the Icarus suggests that do not try to cross the limit.

4) How do you interpret this painting?

Ans,We know that after receiving power, his father's warning will not be ignored. But flying closer to the sun also fell as its wax wings melted. So here I want to explain that Icarus has a sinking foot behind the ship. Icarus is sinking down but everyone is busy with their work that no one has. Time to look at her suffering. Here we also see the harsh reality of the world. This is a modern depiction of Greek mythology Daedalus and Icarus. This painting was painted by Peter Bruegel Elder. This painting is known as 'Landscape with Fall I f Icarus'.

Thank you.
