(1)What is Archetypal Criticism? What
does the archetypal critic do?
Ans).Archetypal
criticism is a type of critical theory that interprets the importance of text
in literary terms with a greater focus on recurring myths and legends and myths
in the narrative, TV serials, movies, symbols, images, and character types. An
archetype is the word of narrative design, word, symbol, character, dream, mass
image, legend, ritual, and universal object. An 'archetype of criticism' means
a repetitive narrative design, and it can create images and patterns of another
character and theme type in the literature. The archetypal critic seeks to find
these patterns, symbols, and legends in current literary work. Criticism of
archeology argues that archeology determines the form and function of literary
works, which shape the meaning of a text through cultural and psychological
myths. Archetypes are strangely basic forms that are embodied or integrated
into recurring images, symbols, or patterns. Criticism of archeology comes from
psychologist Carl Jung, who believed that mankind has a "collective unconscious,"
a kind of universal psyche that dreams and dreams. Unfolds and preserves the
themes and images that we all inherit. Literature, therefore, imitates the
world, but instead "the whole dream of mankind." Jung calls the
mythology "a textbook of archeology" archetypal images and story
patterns, encouraging readers and viewers of movies and films to participate in
rituals with original beliefs, fears, and discomfort of their age. These
archaeological features not only constitute the comprehension of the text but
also fall into the level of human desires and concerns.
2).What is Frye
trying prove by giving an analogy of ' Physics to Nature' and 'Criticism to
Literature'?
Ans). Northrop Frye has
given a very unique idea of Archetypal Criticism by comparing human emotions or
human characteristics with the cycle of seasons. Frye's attempt to prove
physics to nature and criticism to literature by giving an analogy. Basically
here Frye tried to compare both as according to any physics students they
mainly studies or rather learning physics instead of nature. So it can be easy
that physics has structured meaning or ideas to study of nature. While on the
other side of comparison. We can say that criticism has same philosophy or
rather strategy as it has the particular way of study literature. One can learn
criticism of literature but can't learn literature.
3). Share
your views of criticism as an organized body of knowledge. Mention the relation
of literature with history and philosophy.
Ans). We know that literature is all about a
specific phenomenon, or events, or ideas. We can not study the literary genre
without the help of the literature.
Archetype criticism is based on philosophy and History of people. As it
has been said that literature includes history as well as philosophy to convey
its meaning so it displays events and ideas. History and philosophy are two
important pillars of literature. History gives events and philosophy gives ideas
and writer combines both and creates work of literature. Thus both are
important to literature. We are not studying history or philosophy but talking
only their help to understand literature. Literature is the central division of
the Humanities, flanked on one side by history and on the other side by philosophy.
Here we can say that history and philosophy are twin pillars of literature.
History represents the what was happen in past. Basically history is about past
events and actions.
4).Briefly
explain the inductive method with illustrations of Shakespeare 's Hamlet 's
Grave Digger 's scene.
Ans). Inductive
method means something lead from specific to general. Here we take example of
physics to better understanding of this method that when Physics' teacher teach
students first different parts of body like Kidney, heart, eyes, brain, etc.
Then teach whole body parts that's called inductive method. As we read some
specific literary work and comes to a general conclusion,in this way we extend
from specific outcome to general outcome. The best example of this method is
grave digging scene from Hamlet, it is a specific scene and from that scene we
come to some general conclusion. In that scene there were two grave diggers and
they seemed in quite in harmony with
their work. They were talking with one another and singing a song during the
time of grave digging. They were also mocking on dead Ophelia and commented that
whether she allowed to buried or not. Here we can see that they have no grief
for deadly one.It was their work and that's why they were habituated with it.
It became their general work so they have
no emotion for dead one.
5).Briefly explain
deductive method with reference to an analogy to Music, Painting, rhythm and
pattern. Give examples of the outcome of deductive method.
Ans).As we
know, the Deductive method means from general to particular. The music,
painting, rhythm, and pattern there are all arts may be conceived both
temporally and spatially. Music is rhythm and painting is pattern. In a music
we can understand the rhythm of it while in painting we can understand the
pattern of it. Rhythm is a narrative form, while pattern is simultaneous mental
grasp of verbal structure and it has meaning and significance. The criticism of
painting that is why we are apt to think of the narrative as a sequential
representation of vents in an outside “life” and of meaning as a reflection of
some external “idea”. In literature both rhythm and pattern are recurrence
rhythm means the narrative which presents all the events and episodes as a
sequence and action. Pattern in literature signifies it's verbal structure and
conveys a meaning.
6).Refer to the
Indian seasonal grid (below). If you can, please read small Gujarati or Hindi
or English poem from the archetypal approach and apply Indian seasonal grid in
the interpretation.
